Health and Social Care: The Principles of Empowerment
National Voices and NHS Empowering Patients and Communities Board has set six principles for New Care Models to empower supported persons within health and social care.
- Care and support is person centred: personalised, empowering
- Created in partnership with communities and citizens
- The focus is on equality and reducing health inequalities
- Carers are identified and supported
- Sectors such as the voluntary, community, social enterprises, and housing sectors are key partners and enablers
- Volunteering and social activism are recognised as key enablers

Supported people who are more involved in their care plan gain a better understanding of their treatment and how to navigate the health system. They also feel more confident to ask questions that will help them make an informed decision.
The communication between service users and caregivers is improved, increasing the engagement as well as improving the relationship between carer and patient. This also has a positive impact on treatment compliance and outcomes.
