Eating well can help to improve your mood and sense of well-being and can be key to good mental health.

Links between mental health and diet

There is a complex but definite link between diet and mental health. As you will learn when attending mental health training courses in Milton Keynes or through your own experiences, there is a direct correlation between the food we eat and the way we feel. Eating regularly can prevent drops in blood sugar and the associated impatience and tiredness.

Stay hydrated

Eating and drinking the right items and regularly eating and drinking enough can ensure you stay hydrated. Even mild dehydration has the potential to affect the way you feel, your mood, your energy levels, and your concentration.

The right quantities and types of fats are also key. This means consuming healthy fats, such as those found in eggs, milk, avocados, oily fish, seeds, nuts, rapeseed oil, and olive oil. Trans fats, such as those found in processed foods, should be avoided. You can find out more by attending one of the mental health training courses Milton Keynes or elsewhere.

Getting the right balance

A balanced diet can be integral to good mental health. This includes eating enough vegetables and fruit, which contain the vitamins and minerals needed by your body and brain to stay well. You can read more about eating a balanced diet here.

You should also try to include protein in each meal, as the amino acid it contains can help the brain with mood regulation.

Gut health

Your gut health can reflect how you are feeling, slowing down or speeding up according to your stress levels. Probiotics, beans, vegetables and fruit can all help with gut health.
